About this deal

Always unplug your machine and make sure it’s completely cooled off before you begin any cleaning or maintenance. Try to turn the paddle while water is boiling using a wooden spoon or non-scratch tongs. Be very careful of hot water splashing.

It’s a sleek stainless steel design but doesn’t have a viewing window which may be offputting to some people. Things To Consider When Buying A Bread Machine Size I liked this machine, though there were one or two qualms preventing it from finishing higher. Firstly, it was really noisy while kneading. The kneading process doesn’t last all that long – perhaps 30 minutes – but if others can be less aggressive, then it’s a point worth making. The touchscreen was also not the most responsive, often leaving me a tad frustrated. We were very impressed with every loaf the Panasonic SD-YR2540 turned out. We made white, fruit, wholemeal and supermarket bread-mix loaves in the appliance, all of which came out with a crisp, evenly browned crust, with the bread itself soft and fluffy. Upon slicing the raisin bread, it was clear that the bread maker had done an excellent job of evenly distributing the fruit into the bread dough. MyPanasonic SD-2511bread maker shows me on the screen at which stage my dough is at which makes it really easy to determine when my bread will begin rising. Our experiences with the bread makers varied widely. While some ran quietly and couldn't be easier to use, others were very noisy and kneaded so aggressively that the bread maker moved across the kitchen counter. In testing, the 750g white loaf rose incredibly well. But while the sides and bottom were sufficiently browned, the top was pale, despite it being set for the darkest crust. The loaf came out of the pan easily but the paddle tore a hole. It was still a fluffy loaf, but its two-tone look somewhat let it down.

A whole wheat loaf had a huge bubble on top, though it smelt fine – like the stuff you make in kindergarten. Not particularly impressive, but perfectly edible (though very salty). The texture was nice and airy, however. If you are like me and hate getting the holes at the bottom of your loaf and have been wondering when to remove the paddle from the bread machine or how to remove it, then you’ve come to the right place. Once you press ‘start’ on your machine, put a timer on. By doing this, you are trying to see how much time passes between you starting your machine to when the final rise begins. If it’s not as easy to tell the different stages with your bread maker, then take a look at the manual. For the quality of the bread you get, it’s a lot cheaper to make it than buy it at the shops. Is homemade bread better for you than shop bought? The downside is that this bread maker is quite tall, so only just squeezes below some wall cabinets (although this minimises its footprint). Also, there’s no viewing window and it’s pricier than most. Its parts aren’t dishwasher-safe. There’s a lot of information in the instructions – this could feel overwhelming to a baking newbie.

Breadmakers are versatile in the loaf sizes and crust colours they offer, but many come with settings that extend beyond the realm of simple bread recipes. Here are a few other ways to make the most of your gadget: Hate waiting? The Fastbake is the bread maker for you. Equipped with two rapid programmes for making a 1.5lb or 2lb loaf in less than an hour, it’s perfect for a busy lifestyle. This machine boasts 12 programmes that include wholewheat, French, sweet, cake, jam and dough. Bread machineshave become a huge convenience in our life. All it takes is for you to add the bread ingredients in the bread machine, press a few buttons and in a few hours, the whole house smells of freshly baked bread with zero effort on your part. Imean, who wouldn’t want that? The better machines allow you to make different sized loaves (small, medium, large). All have timers, so you can make sure you wake up to fresh warm bread, if you like. Kneading is done by a paddle, which stays in during the baking (and often, on lesser machines, gets lodged into the end product, meaning you have to hook it out – hook provided). However, you are able to get bread makers with collapsible paddles. Collapsible kneading paddles should minimise the hole at the bottom. The great thing with collapsible paddles is that they collapse automatically before the bake cycle. Your loaf won’t come out with a paddle hole at the bottom, but it will come out with a slight indentation of where the paddle was. You’re not getting an entirely smooth edged loaf but, I guess, we can’t have it all!

Extra features: viewing windows, separate yeast or nut and seed dispensers are handy but not essential.
